    Hi Everyone,
I am a recent grad having trouble finding work in design. I have been looking since December and have not found much for somebody with no work experience. Anyway I have a interview this week and I feel qualified except they mention that part of the job is to "spec out samples". This is not a technical job so what does that mean? Do I neeed to be able to create specs/patterns etc?
    Thanks!

Hi! I wouldn't worry to much. If its not a technical position than they probably just mean when samples arrive it will be your job to measure samples and compare those numbers to the spec, to make sure the factory followed the spec correctly. Its really simple, you'll be able to figure it out on the job. Good luck on your interview!

Your welcome, have you heard anything? Usually you'll hear within a week.

I've been wanting a change but the market seems so slooow now, are you finding much out there?

I've been looking myself to get back to work in the garment world since last year's layoff. I responded to tons of jobs from numerous websites and job postings and I am not getting a single call back from them or my agencies that I've have been dealing with it. There are so many people out of work and the responses are not in my favor. I hope the market is going to change for the better very soon. I am all tapped out of funds from anywhere and everywhere possible. I even passed an exam for the Census Bureau for temporary employment and still awaiting a call. Best of luck for peeps who get a callback for an interview.

Carebear- Pick up my text Complete Guide to Size Specification and Technical Design. It will help you on the interviews for "specing" - writing tech pack is big right now. Watch for my next text to come out on that 2010. By the way you can purchase @ FIT bookstore or through Barnes & Noble.

    To Vonghi:
I took the test for the Census Bureau as well. I called the office about a month ago and they'll be hiring in September.

I'm having a hard time finding work.

During July I found a job in apparel on 7th ave and I was simply doing inventory and allocations. So moved on to another job with better pay and such and BS happened at that position and they let me go the week before Labor Day. Sometimes companies hire you with the strong intent of needing more people/staff. Yet I didn't even get the proper training and did not even had my own desk. I was simply floating from desk to desk. I was hired more for like a girl/gal Friday and then was let go due to lack of performance. Basically, I got screwed over. I am trying to get back on track by contacting various agencies and looking all over again. Wishing you the best of luck and to others too in this economy.

So sorry to hear about all of you struggling to find work. Over the last year and half many of our writers/contributers have lost and found and lost jobs again. It's a really tough market, but hopefully things are moving in the right direction. Please keep us updated on your progress and share any tips for others out there looking now.

FYI - StyleCareers.com is having a career fair for those in design in NYC on October 8th, so check it out!

No, Rosalie. I did take something to put some extra money in my pocket but it's not fashion related. So far the job search seems to be about the same to me.

    Hello everyone,

Since my post 4 weeks ago, I have only had one FT job interview. The other interview I had was a temp - perm position which didn't work out either, because the company did not want to train a new individual for the position. Such a waste of time & subway fare. Currently, I am working up to 2 days a week as a receptionist on occasion working through an agency. I have 2 more weeks of NYS Unemployment benefits to claim and required to refile a new claim afterward with hopes of receiving additional benefits. I hope to find myself a FT position very rapidly. Hope the best for everyone.
